CVT Fluid vs ATF: Can They Be Substituted?
CVT fluid and ATF serve transmissions with nearly opposite friction needs. Automatics use fluid allowing controlled clutch slip for smooth shifts, while CVTs demand high friction to keep the belt gripping variable pulleys. Substituting or mixing them typically produces slippage, overheating, or faster wear. Only a multi-vehicle fluid with documented OEM approvals for both types offers a safe exception.
