How to Choose the Right Coolant Concentration Ratio (30%, 50%, 70%)

Concentrated coolant in the engine protects it from freezing in the winter and over heating during the summer and all the time in between. Many drivers and even small workshops take it for granted topping it up with whatever substance is available or making a best guess on the mix. However, the correct mix of antifreeze and water will significantly affect freeze protection, boil-over resistance, corrosion control, and heat transfer efficiency. Most vehicles have a sweet spot around 50/50, but knowing where the 30% or 70% may fit in helps to make sure you aren’t making costly mistakes.

What Coolant Concentration Ratio Actually Means

Coolant concentration ratio is the volume percentage of antifreeze concentrate (usually ethylene glycol based) added to water. A 50% concentration is ½ concentrate and ½ water. Pre-mixed coolants are ready to use at 50/50 and concentrates must be mixed with distilled or demineralized water (not with tap water, as it provides minerals which cause scale and corrosion). 

The Roles of Glycol and Water in the Mix

Water’s high specific heat capacity is the property which makes it so good for heat transfer, but it freezes at 0°C and boils at 100°C, and it has NO built-in corrosion protection. Glycol decreases the freezing point and increases the boiling point of the fluid and also transports additives such as corrosion inhibitors. An insufficient amount of glycol leaves the system susceptible while an excess causes the glycol to become more viscous and cooling performance is decreased. A good proportion enables them to perform their tasks without hindering the other. 

How Concentration Affects Freezing and Boiling Protection

The freezing point falls sharply as the concentration of glycol is increased from 30% to 50-60% glycol concentration.The freezing point decreases in a significant manner as the concentration of glycol increases from 30% towards 50-60% glycol concentration, and the boiling point increases. A 50/50 mix of ethylene glycol will generally yield an effective freeze protection capability of approximately -37°C and an effective boil protection capability well beyond 120°C when the cap is pressurized. This balance is adequate for most passenger cars, light trucks and mixed climates.

In practical terms, this translates to your car being able to cope with freezing overnight temperatures in many areas without the expansion of the coolant causing any damage, and being able to cope with heavy traffic or towing in hot weather. 

Why Too Much Antifreeze Can Still Be a Problem

Many people think that the more concentrated the product is, the more effective it will be, but that’s not the case. After about 60%, the freeze point begins to rise once more, and heat transfer will also decline. If the fluid becomes too viscous, at extremely high concentrations, the water pump can be strained, flow is decreased and hot spots will occur. 

The Common 50/50 Mix – Why It Is Often Recommended

There is a reason why most OEMs advise a 50/50 concentration ratio: it works well. It offers a good freeze and boil protection, best inhibitor performance and solid heat transfer throughout the year. This ratio is used in many factory fills and premixed products exactly for this reason so as to reduce user error.

This mixture typically will keep hold of the down to about -34°F to -37°C and will have a sufficient boil over margin in pressurized systems. It also guarantees full effect of corrosion inhibitors at usual operating temperatures. 

When 50/50 Might Not Be Enough on Its Own

In exceptional circumstances (very cold weather, mountains, and heavy duty industrial equipment), some adjustments could be needed and may be within the manufacturer’s limits. Do not make engine adjustments based on general information, always refer to the specific vehicle manual or coolant technical data sheet. The objective is to remain within known safe limits.

This is a 30/70 coolant/water blend which provides a bit better heat transfer and could be appropriate for consistently warm climates that do not get near freezing. Freeze protection is minimal, only around -13°C/-15°C, and needs careful consideration.

Many OEM’s will establish minimum concentrations as a rule of thumb of 33-40% to ensure sufficient protection against corrosion as well as other problems. When it comes to the temperature, falling too low can pose risks beyond just freezing. 

Risks of Going Too Low on Concentration

Low concentration of glycol decreases freeze protection margin and lowers corrosion protection. The majority of manufacturers, however, recommend a limit of 60% be not exceeded routinely as heat transfer begins to decrease significantly and the viscosity increases. 

For many applications, a 70% mix is close to the maximum practicable limit. 

Why Going Above the Recommended Maximum Is Dangerous

If too much anti-freeze is added the cooling efficiency is also below the required level, which may result in higher operating temperatures during load conditions. It can also cause a loss in heater performance, excess stress on seals and hoses, and pump cavitation on cold starts. More concentrated is NOT more protection, and can cause the same overheating issues you are trying to prevent.

Nothing can substitute for the vehicle maker’s specifications. Refer to owner’s manual and under-hood labels for the recommended concentration range (typically 40-60% or 50/50 as the target). 

Always use dependable tools to ensure the correct mixture, and never guess. 

Tools and Simple Methods to Check Your Mix

The most accurate measurement of glycol percentage and freeze point is by refractometer. A hydrometer is somewhat less accurate, but more sensitive to temperature. For quick checks of the amount of freeze protection and inhibitors, use test strips. Regular concentration testing performed as part of a fleet’s or workshop’s preventive maintenance plan will avoid unexpected problems before seasonal transitions. 

Choosing the Right Ratio for Your Climate and Use Case

Three important points to take into account: lowest ambient temperature, typical operating loads (such as towing, highway, stop and go), and OEM limits. 

  • Don’t get too pure in watered climates that have very mild temperatures and very few, if any, frosts.
  • Generally speaking, 50/50 is a safe rule of thumb for most four season or temperate climates.
  • When freezing temperatures are extreme, make adjustments according to chart until the product reaches the desired glycol concentration, but within the recommended limit. 

Real-World Scenarios for Drivers and Fleets

If the cooling efficiency is needed to be just a little less in a warm coastal region, the taxi fleet may be able to operate near the lower end of the recommended range as long as the corrosion protection remains good. If the delivery truck was in a cold winter region with mountains then 50/50 or slightly more would be a good target for freeze protection during mountain runs. The ideal 50/50 is best for a family car in a variable four-season environment. In each instance, it is not a single number that is important but the regular testing and following recommended procedures by the OEM.
