Do Electric Vehicles Need Lubricants? (Yes — Here’s Why)

What EVs Eliminate: Engine Oil and Multi-Gear Transmissions

Pure battery electric vehicles are a paradigm change from internal combustion engine (ICE). With no multi-cylinder engine running and burning fuel, then there is no need for service with engine oil and oil filters or for the regular oil change intervals that have long been the hallmark of vehicle service.

A large number of EVs also feature single-speed reduction transmission units instead of complex multi-speed automatic transmission units. This is a streamlining of the many of the typical automatic transmission fluid (ATF) service intervals that are familiar to the service technician. 

Why Engine Oil Is Not Needed in a Battery EV

The operation of EV motors is different than combustion engines. They have fewer moving parts with high friction such as pistons, rings and camshafts and generate torque directly via electromagnetic fields. Where many mechanical components once needed regular oil changes, they are now replaced by rolling bearings and electric windings to ensure trouble-free operation.

However, if the motor and drivetrain do not require any lubrication, it does not mean that the engine should not be lubricated. Even neighbouring gears and bearings need protection, but in other forms. 

Which Lubricants and Fluids EVs Still Need

To manage the high rpm of the motors, modern EVs use small e-axles and reduction gearboxes to provide the torque that can be used at the wheels. These units require good lubrication for immediate torque response, high-speed, and thermal loading in confined space.

Temperature variations, even slight ones, may diminish battery capacity, slow charging rates, or possibly speed up degradation. Regenerative braking will help to slow the wear on brake pads and rotors, but it does not replace the need for new brake fluid. While moisture contamination and boiling point degradation is still possible over time, regular inspection and replacement, per manufacturer guidelines, is necessary.
