Transmission Oil for Motorcycles with Wet Clutch Systems

Some motorcycles have a single oil to lubricate the engine and to protect the transmission gear and make the wet clutch operate as it is supposed to. This is a common sump design used on many four-stroke engines, including street, sport and most quad engines. This is very unlike a car engine where the oil does not come into contact with the clutch or gearbox. Transmission oil for a motorcycle with a wet clutch has to perform three completely different tasks simultaneously, which means that transmission oil needs to provide a balance of protection and friction properties.

Riders and mechanics who know this will prevent many of the clutch and gearbox issues. The correct oil ensures positive shifts, predictable clutch engagement and controlled component wear. Insufficient oil properties are evident in the oil as slip, notchiness, or early wear, typically before the oil has been used long enough for wear to be noticed.

How Wet Clutch Motorcycle Lubrication Works

Wet clutches, which are used in motorcycles, are so designed that the friction plates and steel discs engage while submerged in oil. The oil helps to cool the clutch during repeated clutch engagements, carries away wear particles and directly affects the torque which can be transferred without slipping. Multi-plate wet clutches are widely used since they provide more clutch area in a relatively small volume but they only function properly if the oil that circulates around them is the correct friction profile. The oil is exposed to high temperatures in the clutch during hard riding or in traffic, and the oil must be able to absorb the heat effectively without compromising the protective film. 

Shared-Sump vs Separate Transmission Oil Designs

Shared sump motorcycles have the engine crankcase, transmission and wet clutch all in the same oil sump. Oil pump pumps oil to the crankshaft, camshaft and cylinder head. Meanwhile, the clutch pack is cooled and the gearbox gears are lubricated by the oil that is thrown from the crank webs and connecting rods. The oil that is referred to as “transmission oil” is the same oil that is referred to as “engine oil” on these bikes. This configuration is found on most sport bikes with an inline 4-cylinder engine from Japan, a considerable amount of parallel-twin bikes, and a significant amount of adventure bikes. Most people don’t realize how much work oil does in a typical motorcycle shared sump engine and transmission oil system as it is constantly flowing between high shear transmission gears and high pressure oil bearings. 

There are also separate designs. Many Harley-Davidson motorcycles, some with shaft drives and many European models have oil in different compartment to the primary/grease oil. The wet clutch typically operates in the primary case in these instances and is lubricated with a primary case fluid (a specific gear oil or even a dedicated primary lubricant). The oil used in the engine is never mixed with the lubricating oil in the gear box. These bikes should be serviced by following the manual for each compartment individually. 

Why Wet Clutches Need the Right Friction

The clutch friction has to be sufficient to hold the engine on the gears at full throttle but not so strong that it slams the gears together during gear changes or at starting. That friction level is influenced by oil chemistry, both in the static (full engagement) mode and in the dynamic (slipping during shift) mode. If the oils are too fluid, the plates will rub against each other when loaded. Oils that are too aggressive can make the plates start to “catch” all at once, resulting in chatter or a harsh take-up feel.

The difference is most noticeable when accelerating from a stop, or during a rapid upshift, when the clutch should grip the gears without slipping or rattling. Motorcycle oils designed for wet clutches are made without the high-friction reducing additives that most contemporary car oils contain. They also offer the anti-wear and extreme pressure protection required by the gearbox during high sliding loads. That’s the reason why a dedicated motorcycle oil exists, and why it works differently than generic engine oil in a wet clutch.

The JASO T903 standard was developed to provide a testable and consistent method for riders and workshops to determine if the oil they select will be safe for use with wet clutches. It contains a standard wet clutch friction test to evaluate clutch torque capacity as a function of speed and temperature with a given oil. The oils that pass this test are considered to be suitable for shared sump wet clutch motorcycles and are rated as MA or MA2. 

What JASO MA, MA1 and MA2 Actually Mean

JASO MA is the over-arching designation for four-stroke motorcycle oils used for wet clutches. The oils do not contain the friction modifiers normally found in clutch oil that would lead to clutch slip.

There are two sub categories under the MA performance window:

Oils for use in vehicles with moderate friction characteristics are covered by JASO MA1. They also still pass the wet clutch test and are popular on touring bikes, cruisers, and any bicycle where a softer clutch lever feel or gentler engagement is desired.

The friction performance standard is higher as per JASO MA2. Such oils provide increased clutch grip and anti-slip protection under extreme acceleration or torque. Most modern sportbikes and high power motorcycles are pre-calibrated for MA2 friction and many riders experience better engagement and even power delivery on an MA2 oil.

Please note any oil bottle with the designation JASO MA or JASO MA2 has completed the wet clutch test and is safe to use in the motorcycles mentioned in this article.

The test rig is a typical wet clutch pack and the engagement cycles are performed whilst measuring the torque the wet clutch can transmit. Oils that have a torque greater than the minimum pass, those less than the minimum fail. 

Why JASO MB and “Energy Conserving” Oils Are Wrong for Wet Clutches

JASO MB oils are designed to be low friction. They are designed for scooters with continuously variable transmissions and for motorcycles with dry clutch. If an MB oil is used on a bike operating in a wet clutch shared-sump system, the clutch usually starts to slip when the engine has been in operation for a while and is under load.

Nearly all of the “Energy Conserving” passenger car oils and oils with ILSAC GF ratings present the same problem. These oils are formulated with friction modifiers which minimize engine internal friction and fuel consumption. When they get to the wet clutch plates, they decrease the friction coefficient at the proper spot. In a wet clutch bike, anyone who has used “any good 10W-40 car oil” will be pretty much guaranteed to experience the classic symptoms of clutch slippage and “grainy power” pretty soon.

There’s no lack of questions regarding whether car engine oil can be used in the wet clutch of a motorcycle. The only sure-fire solution for shared sump wet clutch machines is to refrain from using them unless the particular car oil has a JASO MA or MA2 rating (which is rare). 

Choosing Transmission Oil for Wet Clutch Motorcycles

The trick to the best oil for your motorcycle wet clutch and transmission is to choose the right oil that suits your motorcycle’s needs and not to search for a generic promise. 

Start with the Owner’s Manual – Viscosity and Specifications

Start with the viscosity and oil type specified in the owners’ manual/service information. The recommendation takes into account the bearing clearances of the engine, the shear loads of the gearbox, the thermal requirements of the clutch and typical ambient temperatures the bike is used in. Typical grades are 10W-40 for moderate climates and 15W-50 or 20W-50 for hotter climates or when high loads are involved. Some manuals also provide the acceptable alternative viscosity range of the oil for the different temperature ranges, which will be helpful if you are a rider who drives in different types of climatic conditions.

Upon viscosity confirmation, look for the JASO MA or MA2 marking and an appropriate API grade (typically SN or newer). The “wet clutch” safety is the non-negotiable part of the rating, known as JASO. The API rating assures that the oil provides minimum protection to the engine, but does not guarantee clutch friction. 

Motorcycle-Specific Oils vs Diesel and Car Oils

Motorcycle-specific 4T oil is formulated to meet the demands of the engine, clutch and gearbox. They normally include a powerful anti-wear package for motorcycle valvetrains, shear-resistant base oils and viscosity modifiers, as well as a friction additive package tested in a wet clutch application. One major benefit of purpose made motorcycle oils is that their additive package is optimized for the interaction of high rev camshafts, shared sump and wet clutch friction.

In some older or lower-revving wet clutch motorcycles, an explicit JASO MA or MA2 rating on the oil’s label has been adopted by some heavy duty diesels. The oils are typically devoid of the car-style friction modifiers that lead to slip. Nonetheless, they might not offer the high output wet clutch’s optimized friction curve or shear stability. The most reliable option for most riders and workshops is the motorcycle 4T oil that is specifically formulated for motorcycles and carries the correct JASO rating. 

How Oil Choice Affects Clutch Behavior and Shift Feel

The properties of oil directly impact how the bike feels when driven by pulling in the lever, rolling on the throttle, or clicking through the gears. 

Signs Your Oil Is Too Slippery for the Clutch

If the clutch seems to be slipping, due to incorrect motorcycle oil, you can fix it before the clutch plates are damaged. The most prevalent early warning is an engine that accelerates without a corresponding acceleration of the car on the road when accelerating rapidly. The bike sounds like it is revving but not “pulling.

Other obvious symptoms are that the engine will no longer brake as effectively on overdrive, a hot or burned odor can be detected from the engine area after extreme riding, and finally in more severe cases, the friction plates will show a glazed or shiny appearance when the clutch cover is removed. These symptoms are often noticed immediately after an energy conserving car oil or JASO MB oil change. If any of these symptoms are present, the first step is to change back to a known good JASO MA or MA2 oil, and see if the symptoms go away. If the clutch plates are already damaged from an oil change, then a persistent slip will typically occur. 

Gearbox Protection and Shift Quality

Motorcycle oil is sheared every time the gears mesh and the shift dogs engage and it is subject to intense shearing forces in a shared-sump system. Viscosity improvers decompose under this mechanical action, and the oil will eventually lose its film strength and cushioning effect on the gears.

As viscosity decreases, shifts become notchy, neutral is less easy to find, and gear whine and/or clunking during rapid downshifts may worsen. A gearbox that stays crisp and quiet longer is the result of oils that remain unchanged in viscosity and possess the correct anti-wear chemistry. Engines and bikes that rev up quickly like track and aggressive street models use oil at a higher rate and may need more frequent oil changes than the recommended schedule. Many riders and mechanics who service high revving or off road wet clutch bikes change the oil at or slightly before the upper corner of the recommended oil change interval because shear and contamination will build up more quickly than in a typical car engine. 

Separate Motorcycle Transmission Oils and Primary Fluids

Not all motorcycles use one oil for their engine and one for their drivetrain. An understanding of these differences enables proper servicing of individual systems. 

When Engine and Gearbox Oils Are Separate

For separate-lubrication systems, the engine crankcase has its own oil system and circulation. The fill point and drain of the gearbox or primary drive are separate from the gearbox/drain and may require a different viscosity or additive package. For instance, on Harley-Davidson motorcycles, it is common to use a particular primary fluid or ATF in the primary chaincase with the wet clutch, and the engine operates on its own oil. Certain motorcycles (shaft-drive) and some European motorcycles operate in a similar fashion. With these bikes, there are two to occasionally three fluid and conditions that need to be checked, making it easy to miss the main fluid on a Harley or the gearbox oil on a shaft-drive.

Although the clutch operates in separate compartments, the fluid in the wet clutch must have the proper friction qualities. High levels of extreme pressure additives are not generally recommended for automotive gear oils because of their tendency to attack clutch friction material or result in clutch glazing. Always use the specified fluid type and viscosity as listed in the manual for the primary/gearbox compartment. 

Dedicated Gearbox Oils vs Shared 4T Oils

When the operating conditions (temp, load or shear rate) are very different from the engine, or the clutch friction requirements are special for that compartment, manufacturers specify dedicated gearbox or primary oils. Even in these situations the selected fluid has to be compatible with wet clutch if there is one present. For example, a general automotive GL5 gear oil isn’t suitable for a motorcycle primary case. The basic concept of the lesson is the same in all layouts: the clutch that comes in contact with the wet clutch plates must be selected first for clutch compatibility and then for gear protection.

Follow the manual exactly for these bikes. An improper fluid in a separate primary or gearbox can cause clutch or transmission failure just as fast as can an improper oil in a combined-sump machine. 

Practical Tips for Workshops and Riders

The majority of wet clutch issues can be avoided by making small changes to oil types and oil maintenance. 

Label-Reading Checklist for Wet Clutch Safety

When filling the oil in a wet clutch motorcycle, take 30 seconds to check the following: 

  • The viscosity grade on the container is identical to the owner’s manual.
  • Clearly marked with the words “Motorcycle 4T,” “Four Stroke,” etc.
  • JASO MA or JASO MA2 are indicated on the technical specifications or back label. Do not use the oil if it has a JASO MB designation or any of the “Energy Conserving”, “Resource Conserving” or ILSAC GF designation.
  • When testing a diesel oil, make sure it distinctly mentions JASO MA or MA2 and that your bike’s attributes match the specific application of the oil.
  • If unsure, call the oil company/dealer with the specific bike model and year. They can tell you if a specific product would work for your wet clutch application and be within the specified JASO level.
  • Take note of the oil brand, viscosity and JASO rating and note how the clutch engagement and shift feel changed after the first hundred or so kilometers. Over time this easy record will help you make better selections regarding each bike. 

Service Intervals and Change Practices

Follow the manufacturer’s oil change recommendation, or more often under hard use, high temperatures or dusty conditions. In a shared sump wet clutch system, the oil is subjected to much more wear than that of a normal car clutch, therefore it is important to keep up with the clutch change to protect both the clutch and the gearbox.

Drain transmission and drain engine completely after warming up. Hot oil drains more completely and a larger percentage of the contaminants and wear metals are removed with it. Once the oil is removed, check for excessive glitter, larger metal particles or a burnt smell. These clues often indicate clutch or bearing stress which should be investigated. Record keeping of what oil was put in which bike is also helpful when a customer comes in with a clutch concern; it will be easy to determine if the correct oil was used the last time.

Wet clutch motorcycle workshops minimize mistakes by having a limited selection of proven JASO MA2 oils in the viscosities that customers are using the most. If a problem does arise with the clutch or shifting mechanism, the consistent product choice will ease diagnosis.

The oil in a motorcycle with a wet clutch system must perform three duties and only an oil that is tested and rated for wet clutch friction can successfully do so. Use the same viscosity as specified in the manual, require JASO MA or MA2, do not use oils containing friction modifiers, and change the oil at the recommended intervals. These steps will help your clutch engage cleanly, your shifts remain accurate and your engine and transmission live long, happy lives.
